What’s lovely about the hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains is that it has trails for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or a bit older, in top shape or not so much, or if you have the whole day or just a few hours to spare. You’ll find a trail that suits your schedule and fitness level.

And the exciting thing is you’ve got some paths that lead to these vast, marvelous waterfalls, and then some trails follow along to these calm, little creeks. While hiking, you’ll walk over these rolling hills, through these peaceful fields, and into these areas packed with trees with these calm, narrow valleys. It’s like a bunch of different kinds of nature all mixed together, each part with its unique vibe and fun to offer.

Here, everyone is encouraged to follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ principles; while you’re out there having a blast hiking, you’re also doing your part to ensure the park stays pretty and clean for the next bunch of hikers who come after you.

Now, let’s explore some of the top hiking trails you should try in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Alum Cave Trail is a fantastic 4.4-mile out-and-back hike overflowing with breathtaking views and a decent workout.

The hike starts off easy, walking next to the Alum Cave Creek. It’s really peaceful, with the sound of water all around. As you go up, you’ll see the forest come alive with colorful wildflowers in the spring and summer or amazing fall colors if you’re there in autumn.

One of the most excellent parts is Arch Rock – this natural archway you get to walk under. After that, the trail gets a bit steeper, but these handy log steps help you up.

About halfway, you’ll hit Alum Cave. This big, overhanging bluff used to be a mining site. It’s a great spot to take a break and cool off.

If you’re up for more of a challenge, keep going to the top of Mount LeConte. It’s a more challenging hike, but the views there are amazing.  

Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife. You might even see some old structures from the 1930s. 

Overall, the Alum Cave Trail is a fantastic mix of nature, a bit of history, and a good workout. Whether you’re a regular hiker or just looking for an excellent new trail, this hike in one of the most famous national parks is worth it.

The trailhead for Andrews Bald is at the end of this large parking lot. From Cherokee, you must drive 20 miles north on Newfound Gap Road to Clingmans Dome Road.

From Gatlinburg’s light #3, take 321 east for 6 miles. Turn right at Greenbrier with a sign for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance. After 3.1 miles on a gravel road, go straight at a fork to reach the Porters Creek trailhead.
